Windows Tips

1. Common Tasks

1.1. Checking for updates

When updates are available for your computer, you may see a notification similar to this one:

Why am I getting a "Software changes are required" pop-up on my ...

When you receive these notifications, you can click on them to select a time to install updates, or if you do nothing, the updates will automatically install when the deadline is reached.  Usually, the deadline is 7 days after the update is released.

If you want to manually check for updates, in your start menu, search or find in the list an application named "Software Center".

Once Software Center opens, select the Updates section on the left menu.

Once you are on the Updates section, you can click the Install All button to install all pending updates immediately.

1.2. Taking a screenshot

In the start menu, search or look in the list for an app called "Snip & Sketch"

Once the app opens, click the New button to take a screenshot immediately, or use the drop down arrow to pick a delay.

The screen will darken and allow you to drag-select a part of the screen to capture.

Once you release the left click, your screenshot will appear in the window.

At this point you can use the inking tools at the top to draw on your screenshot, or use the Disk icon to save it as a picture.

1.3. Change Default Program for PDF

1. Open the default apps.  This can be done by clicking start and searching for default apps.

2. This screen will open This screen.  Click on Default Apps from the left screen and then select choose Default apps by file type at the bottom of the screen.

3. Find the .PDF

4. Click on Microsoft Edge and select Adobe PDF, it should look like this

2. Customizing the Interface

2.1. Pinning Apps to Taskbar

The simplest way to customize your taskbar is by pinning various programs and shortcuts to it through the “Pin this program to taskbar” option, and there are two choices when it comes to getting an application to stick.

The first route is to open the program either from the shortcut on your desktop or through the File Explorer, and once the icon appears on the taskbar itself, right-click it and select the “Pin to Taskbar” option from the menu that follows.

The second method is to find the program you want to pin in the File Explorer. Once located, right-click the icon, and in the sub-menu you’ll find the option for “Pin to Taskbar”.

Select this, and a shortcut to the launcher will be automatically added to your taskbar, and will stay pinned both through system reboots or swapped user logins.

If you wish to unpin a program or file shortcut, you can simply right-click the icon again, and select the option to “Unpin this program from taskbar”.
